Professional Background

Joseph is a tax and corporate lawyer. Before joining CharterLaw Legal as a Senior Commercial Tax Lawyer, Joseph had been a senior lawyer with over 17 years’ experience at top-tier, national and boutique law firms. His practice focuses on all aspects of tax advisory, tax disputes, tax litigation, corporate and commercial law.

Professional Qualifications and expertise

Joseph holds a Master of Commercial Law(Tax)(2nd Class honours) from University of Melbourne, and Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Economics (Accounting and Finance) from Monash University. He is a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) with the Taxation Institute of Austalia, a Fellow of CPA Australia and a member of the Law Institute of Victoria.

Joseph’s areas of expertise include taxation law and state revenue laws, trusts, and corporate and commercial law.

Joseph’s backgroud includes:

  • Providing complex tax advice in business restructuring, corporate tax, mergers and acquistions, tax consolidation, capital gains tax rollovers, taxation of trusts, international tax, employess share and option plans, property development structuring, state taxes including duty and land tax.
  • Negotiating resolution of complex tax disputes and advising on tax audits.
  • Appearances at hearings and drafting applications to the federal Court of Australia, Federal Circuit Court of Australia and Administrative Appeals Tribunal with successful tax outcomes in taxation disputes.
  • Drafting complex commercial agreements and provided Corporations Act and ASX Listing Rule advice in transactions up to $300 million for private and public listed companies, trusts, family groups and individuals with a business turnover of up to $3 billion with industry specialisation in mining, property development, health and pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, retail, professional services, financial services, and retirement village.
  • Appearance at hearings, drafting defences and statement of claim in the Federal Court of Australia, Supreme Court and County Court of Victoria for company shareholders and directors, financial services advisors, companies, trusts, business owners and high net wealth individuals in breach of contract, shareholder disputes and oppression claims.

Joseph has spoken at seminars of the Taxation Institute of Australia. Joseph also speaks to discussion groups of members of the Tax Institute of Australia and CPA Australia.
